What Separates AI Power Users from Everyone Else?

Anthropic published research confirming what Matt has been seeing at TeleCloud for months: the gap between casual AI users and power users is widening, and it has nothing to do with prompt engineering. It's about connecting systems, automating repeatable work, and knowing what tier of problem you're solving. This post has real numbers from production.

Anthropic released their economic index last week. The finding that caught my attention: power users aren't pulling ahead because they write better prompts. They're pulling ahead because they've connected AI to the systems where their actual work happens.

I've been watching this play out at my company for months. Today I used an Asana MCP connector, a HubSpot MCP connector, and a Microsoft 365 integration together in one session to pull the current status of every active project we're running. I needed it to cover for a colleague who's out next week. Took me about ten minutes. Without those connections, that's a half-day of logging into three platforms, cross-referencing spreadsheets, and hoping I didn't miss something.

That's not a prompting trick. That's knowing which systems to connect and having them wired up before you need them.

Why do most people plateau after the first week?

Because they expect a one-sentence prompt with zero context to produce the results they keep hearing about on LinkedIn. When the output is generic or flat-out wrong, they decide AI doesn't work for their job. Then they stop trying.

The gap isn't prompting skill. It's the amount of context and system integration sitting behind the prompt. The person getting great results from AI is not typing a better sentence into ChatGPT. They've connected their project management tool, their CRM, their documentation, their ticketing system. They've given AI something real to work with.

Anthropic's research backs this up. The power users in their data aren't writing longer prompts or using fancier techniques. They've built workflows where AI has access to the information it needs to be useful.

What's the difference between using AI as a tool and integrating it into a workflow?

Here's the simplest way I can explain it.

Using AI as a tool: I ask ChatGPT what the fastest way to resolve DNS on Ubuntu 24 is. It gives me an answer. I go do the thing. That's a search engine replacement with better formatting.

Integrating AI into a workflow: I built a QC agent that reads every support ticket my team puts into review status. It checks whether the ticket has enough technical detail to be actionable. If something's missing, it sends the ticket back to the technician with a specific list of what they need to add. No human reviews the ticket for completeness. The tech puts it in QC status, the agent reads it, and the ticket either passes or goes back.

We processed about 30 tickets in the first two days the QC agent was live. Total cost to Anthropic for Haiku: $2.60. The person who was doing that review manually was a $55/hour resource spending hours a week on it.

The next phase is auto-generating SOPs and knowledge base articles from the validated tickets. Because now every ticket that passes QC has the technical detail you'd need to write documentation. We're not missing information anymore.

How do you go from "I use ChatGPT sometimes" to AI running parts of your operation?

Find something repeatable that follows the same workflow every time and wastes an employee's time. That's it. That's the whole methodology.

Ticket QC was that for us. Every single ticket went through the same completeness check. Same questions every time: is the account number there, is the affected extension documented, is there an error description. A human was doing pattern matching on a checklist, hundreds of times a month. That's not a job. That's a loop.

I think about this in tiers, similar to the enterprise classification that AI Daily Brief has been discussing:

Most people are stuck at Tier 0 and think they've "tried AI." They haven't tried AI. They've tried typing questions into a chatbot.

Is the AI skills gap getting wider or will everyone catch up?

It's getting wider. And the Anthropic data suggests the same thing.

The problem is structural. Companies are too focused on how they do things today to step back and replace those processes. They've been running the same ticket review, the same data entry, the same reconciliation loops for years. The people inside the organization know the process but can't see past it. They're too close to it.

This is becoming a real consulting opportunity. Companies need someone from outside to look at their operations, identify the repeatable loops, and build the automation. Internal teams aren't nimble enough to rethink their own workflows while also doing the daily work those workflows require.

The companies that figure this out early, or hire someone who already has, are going to compound the advantage. The ones waiting for AI to "mature" before they invest are going to find themselves two years behind with no way to close the gap quickly.

Do you need to know how to code to be an AI power user?

No.

Our QC agent, the one processing real customer tickets in production right now, was built entirely with Claude Code on an EC2 instance. I didn't hand-write the code. I described what I needed, iterated on the output, and deployed it. The skill isn't knowing Python or JavaScript. The skill is knowing what to automate and being able to describe what "done" looks like clearly enough that the AI can build it.

That said, understanding how systems connect to each other matters. You need to know that HubSpot has an API, that you can trigger actions on ticket status changes, that a webhook can call an agent. You don't need to write the integration code, but you need to know the integration is possible. That's the mental model gap, not a coding gap.

So what do you actually do about this?

Start at Tier 0. Use AI for your own work until you develop instincts about what it's good at and where it falls apart. That takes a few weeks of real use, not watching a webinar.

Then look at your team's work. Find the loop. There's always a loop: something someone does the same way every time, with the same inputs and the same checks. That's your Tier 1 candidate.

Build it. You don't need a six-month roadmap or an AI strategy deck. You need one repeatable process, one AI agent, and a week to iterate. If it works, you'll know. If our QC agent is any indication, you'll know within 30 tickets and $3.
